Cyprus, popularly known as the ‘Jewel of the Mediterranean’ is a small island with long lasting traditions in clothing manufacturing. The country is home to nearly 170 apparel manufacturing companies, though the value of clothing exported from Cyprus to other countries is lower compared to most European countries. The value of clothing exported from Cyprus to other countries as of 2019 stands at $13 million U.S. dollars.
Cyprus apparel exports have declined steadily since the year 2000 with the lowest export value recorded in 2013. This can be attributed to the closure of many apparel manufacturing companies. In 2008, there were around 404 apparel manufacturing companies in Cyprus. The number has reduced to around 170.
Most of these apparel manufacturing companies are found in the major cities of Cyprus which include Nicosia, Limassol, Paphos, Larnaca, and Famagusta.
Cyprus boasts a convenient geographical location, reliable airlines, and good infrastructure, all of which provide an enabling environment for clothing production. The Cyprus clothing sector is very attractive for foreign investors for many reasons. Cyprus’s EU membership provides a large export market for clothing manufacturers and a wider pool for skilled labor force. The opportunities for expansion in Cyprus are limitless.
